The cord blood stem cells of Ahmadreza’s younger sister, which had been stored in the Royan Cord Blood Stem Cell Bank, were used to treat Ahmadreza’s thalassemia.

According to the Public Relations Office, Fatemeh was born in March 2015 in Jiroft, Kerman. At the time of her birth, her parents stored her cord blood in the Royan Cord Blood Bank for potential future use. This decision was made while they already had a 6-year-old son suffering from thalassemia and undergoing treatment.

After conventional thalassemia treatments, doctors determined that the only effective therapy for Ahmadreza, the eldest son of the family, was a hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Since Fatemeh’s cord blood had been stored in the Royan Cord Blood Bank, the transplant was performed in April 2016 at Shariati Hospital by Dr. Amir Ali Hamidiyeh.

Now, several months after the transplant, the results have been very satisfactory, and the patient’s blood indices have returned to completely normal levels. During a visit to the Royan Cord Blood Bank, Ahmadreza toured various laboratory sections and became familiar with the cord blood storage process.

The Royan Cord Blood Bank expresses its gratitude to the specialist transplant physicians, congratulates them on the successful treatment of this child, and hopes that by storing more cord blood stem cells, it can make significant contributions to treating patients in need of transplants.
