The hematopoietic stem cells from the cord blood of Ahmadreza’s younger sister, which had been stored in the Royan Cord Blood Stem Cell Bank, were used to treat Ahmadreza’s thalassemia

According to the public relations office, Fatemeh was born in Esfand 1393 (February-March 2015) in Jiroft, Kerman. At the time of her birth, her parents stored her cord blood in the Royan Cord Blood Bank for possible future use. This decision was made while they already had a 6-year-old son who was suffering from thalassemia and was undergoing treatment. After the usual treatments for thalassemia, doctors ultimately determined that the only treatment option for Ahmadreza, the eldest son of the family who had thalassemia, was a hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Since Fatemeh’s cord blood was stored at the Royan Cord Blood Bank, the transplant was performed in Farvardin 1395 (March-April 2016) at Shariati Hospital by Dr. Amirali Hamidieh.

Now, several months after the transplant, the evaluation of the results has been very satisfactory, and the patient’s blood indices have returned to completely normal levels. During a visit to the Royan Cord Blood Bank, Ahmadreza toured various laboratory sections and became familiar with the cord blood storage process. The Royan Cord Blood Bank expresses gratitude to the transplant specialists and congratulates the successful treatment of this child. They hope that by storing more hematopoietic stem cells from cord blood, they can make effective strides toward treating patients in need of transplants.
